There have been times throughout our country’s history when military, law enforcement, and first responders were viewed with derision or even contempt. Often pawns in unpopular causes, these men and women were shunned, ostracized, and even abused or assaulted simply for the uniform they wore and the job they performed.
Thankfully, times have changed in our society, and now we often refer to veterans, cops, and first responders as heroes. But why do we do this? What makes these individuals heroic?
Preserving Freedom
For veterans, it’s their willingness to put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms. They serve in the military, often in dangerous and hostile environments, with little regard for their own safety. They leave behind their families and loved ones to fight for our country and defend our values. They sacrifice so much and ask for so little in return. Military service is shamefully one of the lowest-paid and yet most demanding professions in the United States. And yet, our service members in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard do not serve for a paycheck – they serve for their love of their country. It is this selflessness that makes them heroes.
Protecting the Public
Law enforcement officers and first responders put their lives on the line every day to protect the public. They respond to emergencies, sometimes without knowing the full extent of the danger they are walking into. They are often the first ones on the scene of a crime or accident, and they put their own safety at risk to help others. They work long hours and deal with difficult situations, but they do it with professionalism and dedication. They are heroes because of their commitment to serving the community.
Promoting Values
It’s not just their actions that make these individuals heroes. It’s the values they represent. Military service members and veterans, law enforcement officers, and first responders embody the timeless ideals of courage, duty, and honor. They are willing to make sacrifices for the greater good and put others before themselves. They inspire us to be better people and to strive for something greater than ourselves. These men and women embody what is the absolute best of America.
